Elementary Principal: Mickolyn Clapper Superintendent: Jim Verlengia The Colo-NESCO School District provides parents with two wonderful learning centers located in Colo and McCallsburg. Students in preschool through second grade are served at both locations. A highly trained staff of teachers including two who are National Board Certified work as a team to create an environment that encourages students to become lifelong learners. Our staff of teachers are committed to ensuring that our children excel academically, socially, and emotionally. Teachers work together to create an atmosphere that is student centered and enriching. Our students are empowered to challenge their minds as they gain self confidence, independence, and creativity in their quest to become a lifelong learner. Our curriculum is based on national standards. It is research based and developmentally appropriate. Standards and benchmarks are set at each grade level to help guide instruction and provide consistency and continuity as students move from one grade to the next. Descriptions of subject areas: Math- Our math curriculum is based on standards set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Students are expected to learn basic math concepts, math facts, and computation skills. These skills are applied to various problem solving activities that help students make mathematical connections to the real world. Reading- Building students' phonetic skills, vocabulary, comprehension abilities, and fluency are the foundation of our reading curriculum. Instruction is provided in both large and small group settings using a variety of fiction and nonfiction materials. To help students learn how to read to learn, reading skills are also taught as part of the social studies and science instruction. Students are encouraged to read outside of class to practice reading skills to develop fluency and comprehension. Language Arts- To become a lifelong learner, students must be proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in both formal and informal formats. To ensure that happens, students are taught basic grammar and spelling. They are provided opportunities to apply their skills in all areas of curriculum. Social Studies- The core of our social studies curriculum is based upon standards set by the National Council for the Teachers of Social Studies. It is organized around eight strands: economics, citizenship, geography, government, history, culture, social studies skills, and science, technology and society. These same strands are woven throughout the lessons at each grade level. Students are provided with many opportunities to connect new learning to the world around them. Science - In Inquiry Instructional Learning Model shapes how our students learn about the world through science. This learning model is supported by the National Science Education Standards which our curriculum is based on. Students are given many opportunities to explore and question the world around them. Various hands-on activities are provided to build background knowledge and understanding of the scientific world.
